Cosy blanket

Last month, Deon and I went back to Singapore for a couple of weeks to spend time with my family and friends, but primarily to attend my sister’s wedding. I had a whole schedule packed full trying to meet all my friends, ex-colleagues and family members in the short time we had, especially after losing a week to jet lag and a constant sleep-eat-nap cycle.

But I was more than excited to finally catch up with my loved ones, and very eager to make some surprise gifts by hand before I headed back. The first secret gift crochet project I worked on was this simple blanket for a dear friend’s elderly dog, Cotton. She’s a little frail at the moment, so I thought of making a little blankie to keep her warm. It was also a good way to make a dent into my stash of So Crafty baby chenille yarn.

I found this easy yet attractive pattern on Hooked by Robin‘s YouTube channel. You can follow the instructions in her step-by-step tutorial below or here.

I found that the combination of these three colours—cloud (white), storm (blue) and lilac—came together really beautifully. It took me two relaxing evenings to finish this blanket, along with a simple border. I’d be keen to try this pattern again in the future for a cushion cover or throw, but with a high quality and thicker chenille yarn.

Here’s Cotton’s mischievous younger sister, Cola, enjoying the blanket. It definitely did not hold up very well to the gnawing (and abuse? just kidding) by the sweet doggos. Within a few hours, some loops got tugged so hard it was hard to put them back in place, but I got to say this was a good lesson on what works and what doesn’t as gifts for dogs!
